Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Open

0:23 | Creative Liquid Productions | Motion Designer

Here’s a fun little piece for a great cause. Creative Liquid produced a short video for the website of the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Washington, DC and they called me to add some graphical flare. Being that it was pro bono and the client really didn’t have any creative direction, I was able to develop my own visual style.

After thumbing through a bunch of these cute dog photos, I got the idea to treat them like old-school Polaroid pictures where they flew in on screen. Once I settled on a bright and vibrant color palette of yellows, oranges, and lavender highlights, I found some royalty-free grungy paw prints online and decided to mix them with the Polaroids and some grungy elements. The paint-on effect with the logo came about as I was animating one night and hit a creative wall. Initially, I was going to have the logo inside a Polaroid template because the Lucky Dog logo only works on a white background. I tried it over and over, but it just felt flat and didn’t seem to fit. Then it dawned on me: “Why don’t you just paint the screen to and build the logo on top of the paint streaks?” I broke out my Compositor’s Toolkit, found the paint elements, dropped them in, and it worked…even better than I first thought. That build has now become one of my favorite in recent memory.

Whose hand is that you might ask? It’s my girlfriend’s…Katie. She’s a dog lover and convinced me to do this project despite my busy schedule. I’m glad she did.
