Canon 7D Test Shots – Greenscreen

As promised, here are 2 greenscreen test shots taken with the Canon 7D. The studio was setup with tungsten lights for both the cyc and the subject. Camera was set at 1080p24, ISO 800, with the 17-40mm lens at f/4. The footage was transcoded to ProRes 422 and keyed in After Effects with Keylight. I noticed some artifacting along some edges and had to shrink the mask to get rid of it, but for a 4:2:0 H.264 codec, it keys better than I expected. The codec handled motion fairly well, but there are a bunch of artifacts during fast motion shots, like when the subjects raises her arms up and down…the motion blur is not as smooth as say, DVCPROHD, but still acceptable. It’s hard to find affordable (that’s the key word) native 1080p cameras to work with, so the Canon 7D is a great alternative.
