Canon 7D Test Shots – Exteriors

My friend just purchased a Canon 7D DSLR for use in some of his projects and invited me to test it out with him. I had read a lot about the DSLRs that shoot 1080p, seen test footage, listened to some presentations, and even got a close look at some rigs, but this was my first hands-on test. I have to say, I am really blown away by the quality of the video. The Canon lenses produce sharp, crisp images, especially the 17-40 F/4L lens. All of the above footage was shot in 1080p24 at ISO 100 and converted to ProRes for editing in Final Cut Pro. When shooting, we used a flat picture setting which gave me maximum flexibility for color correction. I color corrected the left half of the footage on my new 24″ FSI broadcast HD display. The H.264 encoding is a bit heavier than I expected, but just as clean as XDCAM-EX and even some DVCPROHD footage I’ve seen. This is a great camera and allows so many more possibilities. Next I’ll be posting some chroma key tests we shot on a greenscreen.
